Design

The ASUS ROG Strix SCAR III G531GW comes with mostly plastic design, to which it incorporates several textures and finishes. The plastic is surprisingly sturdy, which gives our review unit a premium feel to it.

This laptop is lightweight and thin that you can get with its 26mm profile and 2.4 kg weight.

Under the ROG Strix SCAR III is probably one of the most unique designs at the bottom side of a laptop. They even printed out ROG branding on the intake mesh to differentiate it from other laptop brands.

Instead of outlined-WASD keys, ASUS changed the overall signature design of the Scar III by giving of a carbon fiber print on the top side of the laptop.

The ROG Strix SCAR III features a skirt of wonderful RGB lights around the sides and the front edge and Asus also threw in per-key RGB backlighting.

It also has an Asus ROG Logo on the back-side of the display which also has an RGB Lighting.

I/O Ports

The ASUS G531GW has a selection of ports that should prevent most people to refrain from using dongles or docks.

On the left side, you will find a 3x USB 3.1 ports and a 3.5mm audio jack for your headphones or earpiece.

At the back-side, we will find the RJ-45 Connector, an HDMI output, a USB Type-C Connector, and the charging port.

On the right side, we will find the ROG Safety Keystone Slot.

Trackpad

The Asus G531GW bears a smooth finish that works reliably and accurately even with wet fingers. ASUS has built-in a number pad too, which you can access by long-pressing on the upper right-hand corner of the trackpad which is printed with the num-lock key.

You can only use the trackpad as a number pad with this mode enabled, but it works excellent and without any problem.

Display

The Asus Scar III’s 15.6in Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) IPS panel has a matte finish that’s perfectly viewable even under bright overhead lighting.

The panel has a 240 Hz refresh rate 3ms response time. Also, the viewing angles are excellent and color reproduction is great.

If you are a gamer who plays shooters that rely on quick reactions, the extreme refresh rate will also come in handy. ASUS also made sure that you aren’t sacrificing on colors, as the ROG Strix SCAR III promises 100% sRGB coverage as well.

ROG Keystone

Asus has its ROG Armoury software to include Keystone support.

Once paired, you can quickly switch to the system settings profile when the ROG Strix SCAR III detects the Keystone.

The removable keystone contains preferred system settings for the Scar III and also works as an access key to the encrypted Shadow Drive hidden inside the Scar III’s physical hard drive.

Nowadays, the only gaming laptops available that have a slot for the keystone are the Asus ROG Strix Scar III and Hero III laptops.

Software

The fan profiles were linked to system power profiles, making for an easy one-click switch between low-power mode up to high-performance setup.

The ROG Armoury Crate comes in handy when you want to switch up your RGB lighting.
