MSI PS42: Creator’s Laptop!

When someone says “MSI”, 90% of us consumers will say “Gaming” as the next word. Did you know that this IT Company has Workstation Laptops and Non-Gaming Laptops as well? In this article, we will review one of those non-gaming laptops that this company offers, the MSI PS42. A compact and elegant companion for content creators, yuppies, editors, and professionals out there.

Here we have the MSI PS42 8RB. A new 14” challenger worth Php76,995 within consumer laptops out today. Can this be your next laptop? Let’s find it here.

Display

This PS42 has 14” FHD IPS-Level Display with 72% NTSC giving you more color accuracy. A thin-bezel panel makes your display a little bit larger than a standard 14” laptop out on the market.

Design and Portability

The outer chassis was hair-brushed making it more elegant as well as the printed logo on the back of its panel. No question prepared when it comes to portability because it’s as thin as 15.95mm and it only weighs 1.19kg. Users of this laptop will never have a problem carrying it all day whenever, wherever.

Specification, Upgradeability and Performance

The unit we have here has:

  • Intel Core I7-8550U
  • NVIDIA MX150 2GB GDDR5
  • 14” FHD IPS-Level Display with 72%NTSC and Thin Bezel Panel
  • 512GB NVMe SSD
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 2x USB Type C
  • 2x USB Type A 3.1 Gen1
  • 1x SD Card Reader
  • 1x HDMI
  • Mic In, Headphone Out

Using the U-series processor somehow seems to be common among all consumer/non-gaming laptops around. On the other note, these kinds of laptop doesn’t need to have such powerful processor like HQ and HK series. This CPU should handle content creating, editing and spreadsheet tasks good enough.

One thing though, MSI lessen the ease of upgradeability of this PS42. If you want to upgrade your RAM and SSD, you’ll likely to disassemble everything inside before succeeding.

Talking about the storage, this unit only has 512GB of NVMe SSD and no place for Internal Hard Disk Drive. But that’s not a setback, because we can use external hard drive or cloud drive for our personal and work files nowadays. It can read up to 16GB of RAM by the way if you have a single stick. It’s also great that they did not take away the SD Card Reader. This is one important feature for creators, photo/videographers and editors.

We tested using it with adobe products such as Photoshop, Lightroom, and Premier. The performance wasn’t bad at all. No signs of decreasing power were seen during our test. No doubt, with I7-8550U, MX150, 8GB RAM, and 512GB NVMe SSD, this laptop was built for faster rendering, editing, and processing jobs.

Keyboard

Keys were big enough for a 14” laptop. Key travels are also great. NO RGB. Of course, this is not a gaming laptop. Well, taste will depend on you. But this only has a white backlight that illuminates when you are working on a dark workstation.

Trackpad

The trackpad is smooth and responsive. Though it doesn’t have the left and right click, the bottom clickers will not be your problem. The fingerprint sensor is working great. This sensor gives you easy access to open your laptop whenever it’s locked or at standby mode. It also gives extra security. We just wished that the trackpad was wider and the fingerprint sensor wasn’t on the trackpad.

Battery Life

MSI claims that this laptop can last up to 10hrs of battery life. But we only got 7hrs and 13mins when we tested the unit by watching movie series with a little web browsing. Maybe, it’ll depend on how you will use and what applications are you going to use. Overall, the battery life is great!

Conclusion:

When it comes to portability, performance, battery life, build quality, and physical appearance, this laptop might suit you best! Though it might be better if MSI put 2 slots for RAM, move the fingerprint sensor somewhere out of the trackpad.

Overall:

Performance: 8 out of 10

Portability: 9 out of 10

Design: 7.5 out of 10

Battery Life: 9 out of 10
